Ivan Seligman’s passion for food and travel has encompassed being a busboy, waiter and, along with other cooks, creating gourmet meals for 24 people to benefit local charities. All is fair game for his palate and this blog.

Tamsen Fox is an eclectic multimedia fine artist, born in Hawaii, Fox has enjoyed a life-long passion for artistic expression. While attending the University of Arizona she studied with the noted photographer Ansel Adams at the Spectrum Gallery in Tucson. She went on to receive her BFA from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA graduating with honors Class ‘79.

Fox has progressively expanded her range of interests with varied applications. She is a multi-media artist whose current work includes gourd art, watercolor, silk painting, metal art, feather art, and acrylics. Animals, Hawaiian designs, Amerindian imagery, musical instruments, spirit masks, and mystical archetypes are just a few of the subjects Fox recreates in her art. She has also published one Limited Edition lithograph print (from a silk original) called “Ring of Fire” that depicts elders, sitting around a mesa fire, passing on tribal lore to younger warriors. This painting was featured in Southwest Art Magazine and can be seen on the “paintings” page on this website.

Much of Fox’s gourd work is infused with the ancient Native American traditions of applying pine needles, shells, leather, feathers, bone, semi-precious stones, crystals, beads, sand, and a great variety of other natural products as embellishments. Special techniques used in her gourd art are pyro-engraving, painting, dying, engraving, inlay work, and etching.

Fox’s work can be found in a variety of publications, galleries, and private collections. Her paintings have been publicized in national and regional magazines (such as Southwest Art and Surface Design Magazine) as well as on the web. Her art is represented in numerous galleries in California, Hawaii, Sedona, AZ, Florida, and New Mexico.

Fox has been gratified by the acquisition of her work by many collectors such as Robert Redford (in his private collection as well as the Sundance Catalogue), native American artist the late R. C. Gorman, and Queen Elizabeth II to name a few.

She has been retained by a number of corporate clients. As an example, Nordstrom Department Store carried her original hand-
painted “wearable art.” This high-end silk clothing line was exclusive to Nordstrom stores in northern California.

One of the highlights has been her standing invitation to participate in the ongoing renowned Indian Canyon Storytelling Festival in California (1995-2004) in recognition of her outstanding artistic contribution to Native American culture. This is an outgrowth of her commitment to commemorate and preserve significant traditions intrinsic to Native American visual arts. Fox has also been an honored guest artist for the International Whole Earth Expo in San Francisco.

“I am constantly amazed not only by the joy derived from this creative art process, but also witnessing the spiritual journey from perception to creation. My work is a very personal rite,” she explains. “My work is an intimate, heartfelt expression of my feelings based on my own life experiences and my own story. My intent is to create an experience which impacts the collector with a sense of tranquility, beauty and balance. My job is to give the spirit behind my creation the magic to carry it through to its recipient.”

Peter started painting regularly in 1992 after returning from a fishing expedition in Alaska. He worked on a fishing boat with Hans Wienberg, a local photographer and lithographer in Pelican. He has studied at the Houston Art league and the Von Liebig Center in Naples FL, but is by and large a self taught artist. His work is heavily influenced by the heavy handed brushwork of Van Gogh, the pointalism of Seurat and Signac and the pure color usage favored by the Fauvists.

” I paint to please myself more than to impress others. I have always enjoyed the feeling of getting lost in the creation of a piece of art, when the thought of all time constraints and limitations are not factors.”

Gerard Closset has been passionate about taking pictures of nature and wildlife for over 30 years. Having lived in different countries, he feels comfortable traveling around the world with the goal of capturing landscape, wildlife and underwater scenes.

Born in France, Gerard spent his childhood in France and several countries in South America. He started taking pictures at an early age, motivated by the desire to capture the feel and look of those exotic places. In his early twenties he came to the U.S. and fell in love with the diversity and richness of its landscapes and habitats and the many opportunities to take pictures of nature and wildlife. He also became a scuba diver and quickly extended his passion for photography to the underwater world, capturing underwater scenes around Caribbean and Pacific islands.

With his wife Nicki, a videographer, Gerard has enjoyed exploring destinations off the beaten path that offer the opportunity to see and photograph nature and wildlife in their natural habitat: The Florida Everglades, Alaska and New England in the United States and regions in Africa and the islands of the Caribbean and Pacific. Gerard is particularly fond of SW Florida’s landscapes and animal life and enjoys picturing its diversity and unique natural beauty. He has carried his photos equipment on many long hikes and boat rides to photograph the birdlife and marine life of the Everglades and the Mangrove islands of the Gulf.

Gerard and Nicki share their time between Marco Island in South West Florida and Block Island, Rhode Island. Gerard is a member of NANPA, the North American Nature Photography Association and many conservation organizations including the Nature Conservancy and the Conservancy of SW Florida. To see more of Gerard’ work go to www.exoticwildlifephotos.com

Dr. Amy Brecka has a rich creative heritage. Beginning with her fathers influence in stained glass, she developed a love for color and design. She also paints and sculpts, but it is her handbags where her artistic self-expression is most evident.

Dr. Amy Brecka hand chooses the leather combinations, cow hides, and vibrant interior fabrics from all over the world. She has an expert artistic eye for style, while incorporating her chiropractic background for function and structure. As an artist, she loves the conflicting duality of the soft smooth supple leathers versus the tactile sensation of the rough coarse hair hides, combined with the added texture of the hand sewn stitching dividing the two materials. Texture is imperative, along with the eye grabbing color of the fabrics chosen for the tattoo designs and interiors. These items are wearable pieces of art for the style conscience individual. Chic, sassy, unique, just like you.
